Budd's Keep On Truckin,

It has been a crazy couple of months (with sickness, a new baby, birthday party for Shiloh and trips to Minneapolis, Wisconsin, Charlotte, Charleston and St. Louis) but we Budds KEEP ON TRUCKIN'!!!  It was great to take a little break from travel in December for Christmas (thanks for coming to us mom!) and in January, where we kept a pretty low profile with colds and winter sickness.

However, Shiloh and I began racking up more miles with out trip to Minneapolis to see the newest addition to the Remer family - my beautiful, sweet, precious new niece!

Welcome to the World Miss Olivia!!

Big sister Lily had no time falling in love with this little beauty!

And Miss Shiloh couldn't wait to meet "baby!"

With a quick return home we headed to Wisconsin for our annual church retreat.  It was a beautiful lodge with a frozen lake and lots of SNOW!  It was the perfect getaway for time with God and time to refocus for the year.   Our church has such a compassion for the congregation and the community.  Kelsey and I are so sad about having to leave this amazing house of God this summer.  We will take the things we have learned and always treasure and share them where ever God takes us next.  One special added bonus to the weekend was nursery care for all the sessions, which meant Shiloh got to play with some of her friends while Mommy and Daddy got to go to the sessions and learn more about how to engage our community with "Compassion and Conversation".  We were also able to have a 'listening prayer' session, which was an incredible experience and then things that God showed us were so on point for Kelsey and I right now.  It is always amazing to me how often God takes the time to talk to each of us, if we will only slow down and take the time to listen.

Shiloh with Dad (yeah that's a frozen lake in the back there - welcome to Wisconsin)

Love my baby girl!!!

Should I go to the snow or not?

After a great weekend getaway we had one week to plan for Shiloh's very first birthday!!!  It was so great to have both Kelsey's parents (Mommy B and Poppy G) as well as my mom come out to celebrate Shiloh =)  Unfortunately after getting back from our weekend in Wisconsin Shiloh had a horrible fever (104+ degrees for over 4 days) and her ear infection seemed to be coming back so we gave her some antibiotics.   And somehow she got her mommy's allergy to it (insert gasp), that's right on the day of her party miss peanut was covered in hives from head to toe, but like a trooper, she hung in there and partied like a rockstar!!!! (well a rockstar with hives)

Baby girl still wanted to be stylin' in her birthday tutu and rubber ducky onesie!

Unfortunately peanut was NOT feeling the cake the first time she saw it.
Luckily it only took a couple of tries for her to decide CAKE isn't so bad after all!

(Amazingly you can't even really see ALL the hives that covered her entire body head-to-toe from her reaction to meds.  *If you ever watch her....NOOOOOOO penicillin for this kiddo*)

With a week to recover from hives and to get our lives back to normal, we had a quick breather to get ready and packed for our next adventure - Abby's Wedding!!!!

Kelsey's cousin Abby was getting married in Charleston, SC and since it was so close to
Charlotte, NC (a mere 3 hours) we thought we would make the most of Kelsey's time off and visit as much family as possible (I have a sister and her family as well as my Dad in Charlotte - plus we are now ALWAYS scouting out new cities to see where we might want to live for residency.)

What was even more awesome about this trip is that we were able to to spend Easter Resurrection Sunday with my Dad, my sister and her family and her in-laws!!!  A huge THANK YOU goes out to my sister's wonderful in-laws Bob and Cindy Bonner who so graciously let us crash their Easter dinner - it was so yummy and everyone left full =)

Unfortunately like most holidays I beginning to notice I forgot to take photos (I know and I'm a photographer right?) but I think there are one or two of us floating around on someone's phone so I'll have to track them down and post at a later date.

But the wedding was so much fun!!! We got to see people we haven't seen in over a year as well as meet folks (well at least for me and Shiloh) for the first time.  Abby was a stunning bride and I can't believe she hosted and event at her house the night before the "big day!"

With events each night, Shiloh got to showcase some of her party dresses, but none was more cute than the dress she wore to the wedding (thanks so much Aunt Sue!!!)

It was also the first time baby girl started telling us "nigh nigh"  aka Night Night for those that don't speak baby fluently.  And admittedly she tried to kick it Budd style (which means being the last to leave any event) but alas this little one's body wouldn't hold out and she crashed by 10 most nights.

After a week of festivities, we headed back to Charlotte where Shiloh was able to play all day from dawn til dusk with her cousins.  It's where she learned "tickle, tickle" from Hannah and discovered her love of frozen peas!  We also had a blast going to Robby's baseball practice.  Adorable doesn't even begin to describe how cute my nephew is in his full baseball gear.  But watching the other kids watching practice was too much for this kid photographer to resist!

Unfortunately one place we didn't expect to go was to the hospital.  My Dad had been passing blood for a few days and on the second to last day we were there asked us to take him to the ER where we discovered his blood count was so low he would need a transfusion.  Luckily everything went well and he was home by the end of the week.

After a flight delay (apparently Chicago can handle 12 feet of snow and still fly planes, but high winds and a little rain shut it all down), we were able to fly home on Thursday (after spending the good part of the day at the Charlotte airport - oh and just in case you're wondering.....NOT the best place to hang out with a 1 year old for hours)

Once home we took another two weeks to recoup and get ready for another adventure....St. Louis!!!!   Why St. Louis you may ask?  I say why not?  It has been a goal of mine since my early 20's to go all over the country and visit (actually drive) through as many states in this country as I can.  So because my husband is awesome (and he knows that I would whine and cry until I got my way on this one) he was willing to spend his last weekend of freedom before starting at Cook County by accompanying Shiloh and I to good ole' St. Louis.

This trip ended up being more fun then I anticipated and we had some unexpected adventures along the way.

First I didn't expect it to RAIN all day Saturday.  Which for most people would ruin the trip, but Kelsey and I have learned one thing in all of our travels around the world....you make the best of the situation you are in and you will be surprised at what you find.  So despite it raining, we decided to change up our original plan of going to the zoo in the am and head to the best possible option - the BUDWEISER BREWERY of course!!!!  It was such an awesome tour - and this is coming from someone who doesn't even like beer!!!  Shiloh loved seeing the Clydesdale horses and even got a stuffed one as a souvenir.  I loved seeing the old buildings and the entire production process.  I think Kelsey liked that too, but I also think he liked the two free beers (well 3 if you take one of mine) and pretzels at the end of the tour.

After the tour the it was still raining so we decided to get one of Kelsey's favorites - Steak n shake fries!!!  Then to kill time (peanut crashed in the car) and wait out the rain Kelsey (and I'm not making this up people) suggested that we go to Nordstrom Rack!!!!  Now those of you that know me well, know that I seek this store out in whatever city I go to, maybe it's from working at Nordstrom all through college and a few years after, but I am always on the hunt for my elusive black handbag (which I secretly hope to find for $100 or less, but be worth $500 or more - it would be the ultimate shopping high!)  So we looked for the handbag (sad to say it was not in St. Louis) and for some schnazzy black lace up dress shoes for Kelsey to wear on interviews.  Alas we came away empty handed for us....but baby girl (who slept the whole time) came away with cute black boots and sneakers for next fall!  SOOOO not fair.

Finally it was time to go to the zoo, and what a aaaahhhhhhmazing time we had.  The animals were super cool (like most animals really) but the craziest part was the penguin exhibits where we were literally a foot away from them.  It was crazy you were getting splashed, they were on rocks just above your head and did I mention it was FREEZING!!  But seriously this was a great zoo and I would recommend it to any one.

Oh and did I mention that this whole day cost a total of $3.56!!!  How?  Well, brewery was FREE, zoo - FREE, dinner - FREE?!?!?!  What dinner free?  We stopped at the St. Louis bread company (which apparently has been bought by panera) and ordered two yummy soup bowls, a great end to a cold rainy day.  But after waiting over 30 minutes for our food, we discovered that they ran out of bread bowls, and that someone else had taken one of the bowls.  So what do they do, crazy people cut a whole into a loaf of bread and give us that (along with a full refund).  Stupid, maybe, delicious, ABSOLUTELY!!!!  Although I'm pretty sure I consumed enough carbs for the rest of the year!!!

So with a quick drive back to the hotel, a evening dip in the pool (Shiloh was jumping/falling into the pool) we crashed to get up at 7:30 am to get our tickets for the Cardinals and go in the infamous arch.  So we got up SUPER early got breakfast and headed to the stadium to get in line for tickets.  Now this has to be one of the best MLB seats programs I have ever seen.  Each and every game the Cardinals give away 275 pairs of tickets for $11.20 - not each but for BOTH!!!!  These tickets are give backs from companies, players, etc.  So for $11.20 we got great seats and enjoyed a game in my 9th baseball stadium (working on trying to get to each one).  After we got the tickets we headed to the arch.   Once there we bought the tickets and waited for our time to go up...now for some reason I thought there was some elevator that would take us up.  I did not however, think that it would be a little pod that looked more like a prop from "Mork and Mindy" than a safe way to go up X stories.  I made it (although it was not my favorite part by any means) and finally we were at the top where you have about 100 sq ft to walk around and look down.  SOOOOOO needless to say after about 10 minutes we were back on the ground and headed to my favorite passtime - BRUNCH!

After a delicious brunch (with popovers!!!) If you don't know what popovers are I suggest, no insist that you find a restaurant near you or even make them yourself, but you must, must, must have them with strawberry butter) we headed to the game.  It was such a great time and Shiloh LOVED cheering for the players (on both teams) and chatting with the crowd around us.  Although, I must say the stadium DID remind me of my now home stadium, Citizen Bank Park and it reminded me of all the wonderful games Kelsey and I have gone too and made me wonder if we can squeeze a game in for June..hmmm....we'll see.

After the 7th inning we decided to get a head start on the 5 hour drive home.  But as life always happens for us, we had an unexpected detour that was a complete blessing.  So we thought leaving when we did that Shiloh would crash for her afternoon nap (especially since she didn't have a morning nap.  But she decided to hang with Mom and Dad and stay awake.  So we weren't able to drive as long before having to stop in Springfield.  What, the same city that Kelsey's mom was born and lived in......crazy coinsidence, but we were able to go and see the house that Kelsey's mom grew up in!  It was such a treat for Kelsey to see the place his mom has talked about.  It's all about those unexpected journeys in life that teach us the most.  For more on learning about yourself, feel free to check out my latest post here.

So now we are in May and I think we will stay in Chicago for this month before hitting the road again.   Until next time, hugs and kisses (even long distance) can warm any heart at any time.

Cousins

  • After Pensacola the plan was to fly out on Tuesday morning and arrive in Charlotte to visit Aunt Brigetta, Uncle Bob, and cousins Robby, Hannah and Elijah.  But hurricane Irene had different ideas, and so after canceled flights and a few hours on the phone we were heading to Mobile to fly out on Monday night!  Thanks again to Auntie Danielle for driving us all the way to Mobile so we could get out.
  • In Charlotte we had just a few days to get to know everyone, but it was fun to see Shiloh rolling around with Elijah (they are just one week apart - Brigetta and I ended up switching due dates when the time came for the kiddies to arrive.)  We had a great time and loved going to the park and seeing Uncle Bob's family too!

    • First time eating solid food - rice cereal, and sweet potatoes followed by peas, green beans, squash, carrots and bananas (peaches were not a fan favorite although mom and dad loved them)
    • First time eating in a high chair!  An upgrade from the bouncy seat and she hasn't looked back since!
    • First time to an apple orchard and pumpkin patch.  It was so much fun and we had a great time, we lucked out and had a beautiful day full of sunshine and the perfect weather to take a few pictures of peanut in all the fall beauty. Oh and did I mention apple cider doughnuts!!!  These are little gems of goodness that I discovered last year in our time in Saginaw, Michigan.

First Time Eating Solid FOODS!!! LOVIN Sweet Potatoes!!!!

First TOOTH BRUSHING - Thank you Poppy G!!!!

First time at a PUMPKIN PATCH

What is this Mommy?

Hi Mommy!

What's over there????

  • This was also a tough month for me personally.  My father, in an trip to the ER discovered that the pain he has been having in his abdomen was not just "old people pain" that the VA doctors kept trying to give him more pain medicine for, but in fact pancreatic cancer!!!  It was a really tough thing to hear, my dad is only 71 (well, 72 by the time I am writing this post) and in fairly good health, so it was a complete shock to me and my sisters.  Not to mention that my sister and her husband (who has stage IV colon cancer) we waiting for results of being off of chemo for three months - this was going to be a test to see if the tumors would grow or if the cancer would spread with him off of chemo and living the vegan life.
    • PRAISE GOD!!!! He didn't have any growth and some of his levels where BETTER than they where when he was on chemo.  Now we just continue praying for radically miraculous healing that all cancer in removed.

OCTOBER
  • This was a month of visits with all of the grandparents (luckily there were all spread out)
    • It started in early October when Mommy B and Poppy G came out to Chicago to visit!  What a crazy time we had finding a hotel for them (until we realized the Chicago Marathon was happening that very same weekend, then it all began to make sense!)  Luckily we were able to find them a great deal downtown for a couple of days and then they spent their last couple of days with us =)
      • Shiloh also decided to make her crawling debut this weekend and shocked us all by moving on the floor of the hotel room.....little did we know that was just the beginning!!!
      • We also did apple orchard/pumpkin patch take to Illinois style.  Unfortunately we did not get the same beautiful weather that we did just a few weekends before in September, however we did still get some awesome apple cider doughnuts, REAL old school licorice, and hot cocoa - oooohhh and we saw a pig race!!!  YES little, cute, adorable, baby pigs racing...was the most adorable thing ever!

It was a cold, cold, October Saturday!  But we made it through =)

CHEESE!
  • After a week and a half off from visitors, Shiloh and I boarded our second plane to go and surprise Grandma Debbie for her Birthday!!  Let's just say  she was shocked to find Shiloh and me at the Target Starbucks on her birthday.
Grandma and Baby Girl!

  • After all that traveling you would think we would be done, but we kept on trucking with our THREE MONTHS OF TRAVEL....next stop Michigan.
    • In Michigan, we had the honor and privilege of co-hosting (thanks so much to Brian's parents for letting us use their home and for helping with the food/snacks/beverages) a baby shower for our dear friends Brian and Anna .   After battling chemo and cancer while pregnant we are happy to report that both Mama and baby Moshe are doing amazing! Anna is cancer free and Moshe is almost back up to full B cell count.  G-d is beyond amazing and it is wonderful and awesome to see what prayer can do!
Brian & Anna

Brian, Anna and Big Sister Dara!

    • It was so wonderful to be able to not only see Brian, Anna and Dara, but to be able to see a few of our friends who we hadn't seen since we lived in Dominica or Michigan.  Plus it was Shiloh's debut to all of Daddy and Mommy's Ross Friends =)

November

  • In Budd like fashion we continued traveling across the country to visit family and friends.
    • In the beginning of the month, Shiloh and I along with my sister Breanna and my niece Lily, traveled to Florida to visit my Dad after he has surgery to remove the cancerous tumor in his pancreas   Due to tight budgets, we decided to rent a car and drive down.  WHAT?!?!?! Drive with a three year old and a 7 month old, crazy right? But the kids were awesome and the ride although about 15ish hours total each way went pretty smoothly.  A special GOLD STAR is given to Lily who first rode with her mom on Megabus from Minneapolis to Chicago, played at Auntie Nicole's for a few hours, eat some pizza and then rode in a car for another 15 was such a trooper and she didn't cry or fuss in the car ONE SINGLE TIME!  Like I said, the kids were amazing!!! * due to the nature that all kids are not created the same we do not advocate traveling for such long hours with small children in a car, please do so at your own risk*
Shiloh LOVED letting Rocky lick her!  It was her favorite thing =)

Cousins playing in the super nice November Florida weather!

  • After returning home from Florida, we decided to stay home for a couple of weeks and let the friends and family come to us!  Shiloh got to meet my friend Teddy from high school and college, who just happened to be in town.  And we also had a visit from one of our favorite aunts.....AUNT C!!!!
    • Kelsey's sister Courtney came out to visit us and Kelsey's uncle in the middle of November.  It was so great to see her and for her to get a little R & R time at a beautiful hotel - which Shiloh and I took complete advantage of by going swimming in the pool.  Shiloh LOVED her first time in the pool - me thinks I should be looking for swim lessons for this winter for sure!

Playing with toys

Getting into trouble.......
  • Our final travel of the month (and of the past three months) came with out trip back to Saginaw for Thanksgiving.  *Apology to all friends who were living in Saginaw over Thanksgiving that we didn't get to see, we were only there for two full days, so it was a quick quick trip* Kelsey and I have had the honor of having Thanksgiving with our friends Brendan and Kristen for the past two years and we couldn't see having them so close and not being able to see them (and of course introduce Shiloh to them as well.)  So once we found out that Kelsey would have the day after Thanksgiving off (on the Monday before) we made a quick decision to head out and drive to Saginaw!  It was quite a drive as trying to leave Chicago at 11am on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is clogged to say the least in the traffic department.  But after 2 hrs we finally made it out of the city and were on our way.  Thankfully our friends are awesome and waited to have dinner until we arrived!  Yummy food and beer/wine always makes a drive better,
      • The Thanksgiving dinner was amazing!!!  Dinner consisted of a brined turkey (a must if you have never had one) done by Brendan, greenbeans with garlic, butter and lots of yumminess, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, rolls, oooooh and the most amazing pumpkin cheesecake you will ever taste (Kristen's specialty)!  Shiloh loved the mashed potatoes, greenbeans and rolls - we were so excited that she was not only able to have a first Thanksgiving dinner, but tasted it as well!
Brendan and Kelsey in the Kitchen getting busy!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

      • With Kelsey having Friday off we decided to stay until later that night to go to the candle lighting ceremony in Frankenmuth.  This is a great little German town just about a 20 minute drive south of Saginaw.  It is home to the LARGEST Christmas store in the country (it might even be the world) that is a must if you are ever in the area.  It was fun to get into the Christmas season, singing carols, and having hot cocoa and cookies!  Thanks Brendan and Kristen for another great Thanksgiving celebration!
Congratulations to our newly engaged friends Brendan and Kristen!!!
It was FREEZING OUTSIDE!!! But the cookies were delicious =)

Thanks for reading such an incredibly long post and will send out Christmas and the updates for this year this week, then I will begin my quest to at least post once a month from here on out.

Love you all,
The Budds

Where did the summer go? Part 1

I had high hopes for my blogging capabilities this summer, thinking at least I could get once a month down and then after the summer I would go more often.  Well, as all things have happened since having a child, I miscalculated and here we are, a blog that hasn't been updated in over two months.

So without further adu, I give you the Budd's in Short:

July:

July always used to be the longest month in the summer for me as a child, I usually got out of school somewhere around the middle to end of June and it seemed like I had the rest of my life to enjoy the summer weather.  And as an adult, working for a non-profit that operated during the school year, July was still a  month that I could leave early and enjoy the nice days of summer!

Fast forward to mommyhood.....what do you do when you have an infant and it's 90+ degrees outside for weeks at a time?  You do photo shoots.....

I'm getting a little too big for the ottoman photos mom!

Tummy Time

Nice and Clean

Teething

In July Kelsey finished with Peds (with an A) and was off to Internal Medicine.  This rotation will be 12 weeks long and by the end of it, Kelsey will be half way through his 3rd year of medical school.  It is so hard to believe that it was a little over two years ago that we started this adventure together and now he is almost to his 4th and final year of medical school.

Kelsey looking like all of the other photos of Kelsey on the first day of a rotation.

Fourth of July was pretty different this year.  Why?  Well because we were afforded the wonderful and exciting opportunity to move our entire apartment two floors down to our new apartment in 100+ degrees!!! Don't lie, I can see the jealousy forming already.  Yep that's right Kelsey and I moved our entire apartment between the hours of 10pm - 2am (July 3rd/4th) and the rest 9am - 12pm July 4th.  All in some of the hottest weather I have ever experienced (and remember we lived in Dominica for 16 months!)  Thankfully it was all in the same building so we could let Shiloh sleep while Kelsey and I moved most of the items.

However, moving two floors down did a world of good for our heat issue and poor little Shiloh didn't have to sweat so much with the AC on and a cooler apartment!  Unfortunately there was a small accident that involved an AC falling out of a 4th floor window, cops and our janitor almost having a heart attack (he's fine), but other than that the move went on without a hitch and we are happily settled in our new home for the next year.

After moving, Kelsey, Shiloh and I got dressed and headed to meet our friends for fireworks off of Navy Pier...it was perfect!  We arrived right before they started and were far enough away that the loud noises from the fireworks wouldn't startle Shi.  But before we got there we decided to "treat" ourselves to a dinner for all of the hard work we did in moving that day.

So patriotic Shiloh and I

Daddy's little girl!

Uhm did I mention how amazing the food was?  We walked to our first choice and sadly found out that it was closed due to a fire....as we walked along Irving Park to meet our friends for the fireworks, we contemplated eating fast food (not a choice either of us wanted, but our growling stomachs were voicing their opinions as well).  After deciding to go one more block we came upon Holiday Club!  Such a cute little joint and to top it off our burgers and fries were on the daily special menu for $5 each!!! Seriously!?!?!? So it was with full bellies that we enjoyed the rest of our Day of Freedom and good friends.

The rest of July involved trips to the park, going to church and unpacking our apartment.   For the rest of the Summer Update, stay tuned for "Where did the summer go? Part II"
